Elections 2006
John Jackson
Candidate for: Mature Students’ Officer
My name is John Jackson and I’m a 1st year studying Linguistics and English Language. I would like to stand as Mature Students’ Officer so as to try to resolve any issues faced by mature students throughout their university life and continue the work of Sam Godwin in establishing a regular social network.
Having lived with a group of fellow mature students this academic year has helped me to understand that the issues and needs are very varied. The fact that we are over 21 years of age is not all that needs to be represented. For this reason I am looking forward to hopefully working with other members of the Executive in order to help combat any problems that are wider in scope.
I aim to hold a regular surgery, possibly weekly or fortnightly (dependent on consensus), so as to target any troubles for individuals or groups alike and to help to resolve them as soon as possible.
In relation to social events, I hope to organise a selection of gatherings throughout the year which would include trips and visits around North Wales or even further a field. My intention would be to involve as many students as possible and not only those who like a drink, however obviously the option to have an alcohol-related get-together will be there too!
Finally, it has been brought to my attention that the amount of literature relative to mature students in welcome packs from departments and the university as a whole is quite sparse. I aim to liaise with the university and the students in order to clarify the various options that are open to them at the different stages of mature student life, from application to graduation and beyond.
Thanks for your time and hopefully I’ll see you around soon.
