Elections 2006
Lowri Davies
Candidate for: Welsh Affairs Officer
My name is Lowri Davies and I’m originally from Benegoes, near Machynlleth. I’m now in my second year here in Bangor studying for a Welsh and Journalism BA. I enjoy my course immensely as I’m learning and understanding more about the Welsh language and Welsh history every day.
For my first two years I have lived in the John Morris Jones Hall and have enjoyed the unique Welsh society there. It has given me the opportunity to meet bilingual friends and participate in a number of extra-curricular activities.
Although I intend moving into a house in my third year, I hope to continue socialising with the JMJ residents and were I elected to this post I would create and maintain contacts between the Welsh students of Bangor.
Earlier this year I was elected to be a part of the Cymric team, which involves helping the UMCB President in an organisational capacity. So far, I have collaborated in organising a great many social nights, including a Pub Quiz and the 6 Nations rugby trip to Ireland. I have thoroughly enjoyed the post as it has meant getting to know my fellow students far better and fulfilling their needs.
As University of Wales, Bangor Welsh Affairs Officer, I would try to promote and strengthen the Welsh society by listening and trying to resolve problems that might arise. I also hope to successfully work with the UMCB President to ensure a successful social life for Welsh speakers, as well as addressing important Welsh matters such as the Welsh Federal College Now campaign and Welsh Language Society campaigns.
I believe that the post is an important one as Welsh affairs are a daily part of Welsh student life in Bangor and we need an officer that can be depended upon. As I have already been part of the successful Cymric team this year I intend to continue with the work to the next level.
