Each year the SU hosts an annual Societies Awards night, celebrating the very best of what our Student Societies do.
In order to be in the line-up for the highly coveted Societies Awards Trophies, Societies and the individuals that run them, need to be nominated by YOU.
There are various award categories for societies to enter as well as awards for individuals, so get your nominations in!
The society of the year will have attained high levels of participation in activities and events from members, attracted new members whilst retained old members. Hosted a wide range of well-organised activities and events throughout the year, using well designed publicity across a wide range of mediums.
The society’s members will have had high levels of enjoyment as a result of participating in the society, and the committee will have experienced good feedback from members.
The society will ultimately have enhanced the student experience and gone above and beyond the Society’s Aims & Objectives and improved on the activities undertaken in previous years.
This award is for a society that has made exceptional contributions to the improvement of Bangor and community relations and established links with the local community beyond that ordinarily carried out by the society. This can include (but is not limited to) local fundraising initiatives, community events, community development, political lobbying, campaigning or anything which has had an impact on local people’s lives.
The Most Improved Society will have demonstrated clear change, growth and development from previous years, resulting in an improvement in the range and diversity of activities and events put on for their members. They will have increased their membership and participation in their events throughout the year. Leading to them (and their events) having a higher profile on campus
This award is for the best new society to enter the SU since the last Societies Awards, one which has attracted plenty of members, had a clear purpose and achieved its stated aims, but at the same time demonstrated its potential for future growth and development, beyond the first year of activity, and shown that it is a Society that is here to stay.
The international society of the year will have provided support, networking and social opportunities for international students whilst opening their society up to students interested in foreign cultures and languages, inviting everyone to participate in a wide variety of events.
Academic societies should supplement departmental learning with a range of extra-curricular activities such as talks, field trips and volunteering work, broadening the minds of their members whilst remaining enjoyable and sociable. The winner of this award will show a commitment to providing knowledge and experience to members for whom the subject is a hobby just as much as to members studying the subject for their degree.
The achievement of the year is a fairly open category; the award will go to a society that has done something spectacular, whether it is overcoming extreme difficulties or achieving something far above anything that was ever expected of the society.
Societies have a huge potential to make a positive changes, whether for students, the local area, or even making a difference nationally or globally. The Campaign of the Year award will go to the society that has worked hard to make a difference on an issue of their choice. The campaign will have used creativity to achieve its objectives and utilized a wide range of available resources and communications channels. It will have engaged with students and got them to take action.
The Faith Society of the Year will have supported their members’ spiritual needs through an extensive program of events, whilst at the same time encouraging non-members to become involved and discover more. They will have engaged in inter-faith activities, working with other faith societies and groups assisting students exploring and discovering their spirituality. The society will have worked with both the student and local faith communities throughout the year.
Many student Societies raise money for good causes and charity. This award exists to reward the most innovative, exciting and engaging fundraising projects. The winner will have raised the profile of student fundraising on a University, local or national level, raised awareness amongst the student body about the issue or cause that they were raising money for, and have made a significant donation to a chosen cause.
This award is also a fairly open category; the award will go to a society that can demonstrate they well able to put on an event better than any other society, an event that kept everyone talking about it for months afterwards, an event attended by students from all backgrounds, not just the regular members, an event that is completely different from anything Bangor has experienced before.
From plays to concerts, to comedy to dance, there is a huge amount of performance that takes place in Bangor…but what was best this year? The Performance Award will go to a performance that was innovative, successful, well promoted and well attended, by both students and the members of the local community.
The Environment Award will be won by the society that can demonstrate they’ve made a positive impact to ‘Green Issues’, whether by raising awareness, engaging students, lobbying the university, running a campaign, or simply taking sustainability into account in their regular activities.
The Collaboration award rewards Societies working together to enhance the student experience at Bangor and pull off big events and huge results. The winners will need to explain how and why the collaboration started, what each group committed to achieving the result, and why it wouldn’t have been possible for a single society to achieve by themselves.
These awards are to recognize the exceptional contribution by individual students towards enhancing societies and the student experience.
The individual awards are divided into are two types of awards, gold and silver (similar to the full and half colours system of the Athletic Union).
Gold awards will be awarded to individuals who have gone beyond their means to have a significant impact on Bangor’s societies. They will have shown outstanding involvement and contribution and exceptional dedication to their society(s), they will have performed their role(s) far beyond the levels that were expected, taking on additional tasks and bringing new events, direction and innovation to their society(s). Gold Awards are limited to only being awarded to individuals who have maintained a total of no less than two years worth of regular society involvement.
Silver awards will be awarded to individuals who have been a positive influence within their society(s) this year. They will have been hardworking, fulfilling their role(s) to a high standard, and offering time, ideas and support.
