BUGS – Bangor University Guides & Scouts
It doesn’t matter if you’ve been a Guide or Scout all your life or if you just want to join in the fun, this society is for you if you want to enjoy all the variety and opportunity that comes with being a BUG.
Affiliated to the Students Scouts and Guide Organisation, we exist to help students start or continue Scouting and Guiding throughout their university career. We have a unique position where we can do a huge number of different and exciting activities.
BUGS is a great excuse to do what you enjoy and we often:
- Have mini adventures, from night hikes at Swallow Falls to exploring in Snowdonia.
- Nights in with films and
- Nights out with friends
- Archery competitions
- Rifle shootouts
- BBQs on hilltops and
- Sing-songs round campfires
- Not forgetting being crafty with glitter, glue, egg boxes and bedsheets
We have four national events a year, where 100–250 students from across Great Britain come together. We mostly get wet and muddy camping but have a great time exploring the various university cities. We also have a Ball once a year to see each other in our posh stuff with good food and good music.
Other opportunities that you gain through BUGS are getting involved with the community, either as a leader at one of the nearby groups or at any of the events we host for the local guides and scouts (from discos to Jamborees) and many of our members are completing their Duke of Edinburgh Awards, so it’s a great society to join if you’re looking for expedition team members.
Our events are often held on a Sunday afternoon, dependant on what we’re doing that week, camps are Fri afternoon to Sun afternoon (we can provide sleeping bags and tents) and we can always be found in Varsity on a Sunday Evening for the pub quiz for our weekly socials.
