CathSoc – Catholic Society

Hey Everyone!

My name is Ciara McBride and I am President of Bangor University Catholic Society (otherwise known as CathSoc). We are a society of the Students’ Union and run in conjunction with the University’s Catholic Chaplaincy.

CathSoc and the Chaplaincy provide a home away from home where you are welcome to come and hang out. There is a range of things you can do here from sitting watching the latest episode of Eastenders or Coronation Street to playing pool on the beautiful pool table we have.

CathSoc have a weekly meeting every Wednesday at 6:30pm in the Catholic Chaplaincy and this meeting is open to anyone who wishes to come and help out with the administrative side of CathSoc – this is anything from organising events to placing orders for the society hoodies. We also run events and socials during year – last year we had All Saints Night, International Night, Bowling, CathSoc Christmas Dinner and a Summer Fete and we are hoping to do much more next year!

The Chaplaincy is a beautiful house which is at the bottom of Menai Avenue (next to the Bodnant Medical Surgery). It has a living room with some of the comfiest couches I have ever sat on which also has a TV which is normally host to the latest soap or one of the films we show. There is a Chapel and we are very honoured to have the Blessed Sacrament in there. We have a great library which is one of the few rooms where you cannot gain access to the internet which makes it perfect for essay writing when Facebook is distracting you. We have the Rock Room which is home to our pool table and you will never be lost at finding someone who will give you a game. It also comes with three very adorable cats, Kasper, Percy and Truffle, so if you have a pet at home these guys will make great substitutes.

CathSoc also comes with an amazing Chaplain, Katherine Dunkley, who knows so much and has amazing life experience which is so useful when writing essays especially for me as a history student and if she does not know something she will probably know someone who does. Katherine also offers amazing spiritual advice and is a trained listener so do feel free to talk to her if anything is worrying you – she is very hard to shock and gives amazing advice.

The weekly events we run are:

Not to mention Mass every Sunday at 10am and 5pm where we go together as a society. After 10am Mass we all come back to the Chaplaincy for lunch together and then those who could not make it to Mass in the morning go together to evening Mass.

CathSoc was an amazing part of my first year and will continue to be for the next two years I am at university. Some of the best friends I have have been due to going to the Chaplaincy. You do not need to be coming to one of the events to come to the Chaplaincy; there is always a pot of tea on and someone around to have a laugh with.

On behalf of all the committee I would like to welcome you to Bangor University and wish you every success in your academic journey. If you see us walking around Bangor do not hesitate in coming over to say hi, we are a friendly bunch (you will know it is us as we will probably be wearing our navy blue and yellow hoody). We will also be at Serendipity, hope you are too. If you want to talk to us before you get here CathSoc is on Facebook and you can find us by putting in our email address which is cathsoc@undeb.bangor.ac.uk and you can follow us on Twitter at BUCathSoc.

See you in September!

God Bless,
Ciara McBride
