Having established in October 2006 we still consider ourselves to be a relatively new society, however that does not mean we are inexperienced. Over the last year, some of our members have secured residencies in local venues, and some have years of experience behind them.
We are a very active society within the University and the local area, hiring out our services for, club nights, society events and private functions. This means as a member of the DJ Society you will get many opportunities to play out at the numerous gigs we are hired for throughout the year. Lessons are relaxed, and new members are paired up with a mentor with similar music tastes, so that they can pass on their knowledge in the most efficient manner. We would also be grateful for anyone interested in event management, graphic design and all the wider elements of DJing and running events that would like to join us.
Over the last year have invested in our own equipment, so new members can practice and learn without the need to invest in their own expensive set up. We also gained a sponsorship for the first time, which includes a residency, allowing members to play and build their confidence behind the decks. These factors, and the tireless work of our committed members earned us the accolade of ‘Society of the Year 09-10’, and we also had the honour of supporting Radio 1 DJs Greg James, Annie Mac and Pete Tong as part of various ‘Big Weekend’ events in Bangor.
Our broad aim is to create opportunities for DJs and producers – aspiring, budding, proficient or experienced, and with varying tastes in music - to play out in the local area whilst developing their skills, building contacts and sharing their passion with like minded people. We provide an outlet for talent and a centre for creativity and believe that many of this year’s members have grown tenfold in confidence due to the nature of the way we run our society and the activities we undertake.
Socially we meet regularly to keep each other updated on our activities and society news, and we enjoy nights out to local and national events to see top name DJs in action. Our socials have included Christmas at the local Go-Kart track, an Easter trip to the clubs of Chester and our end of year lunch in the sunshine at Fat Cat. We really do cater for everybody in our society, and always welcome and encourage input and participation of our all members, new or old, across all areas.
So if you think the DJ Society is up your street and you would like more information on how to get involved please contact us via e-mail – djsociety@undeb.bangor.ac.uk
