Not all kit has to be high-tech or expensive: For example, you will probably be able to find some suitable walking trousers in any of the second-hand stores on High Street, and waterproofs, hats and gloves can often be found at Aldi. Any committee member or walk leader should be able to give advice on equipment.
Below are some suggestions for what to bring onto the hills. Its not all crucial, as long as you have walking boots, no denim, and can stay warm, dry(ish) and safe, we're happy.
Make sure you don't forget your Camera, a Smile, and £5 for the bus!! (£4 if you're a member of the club)
Good quality walking boots. Apart from a few rare exceptions, you will not be allowed to walk with us if you are not wearing hiking boots with ankle support. A good pair of boots can last for up to a decade and are well worth investing in. |
Walking socks. |
Light, quick drying trousers. ABSOLUTELY NO DENIM: they limit your flexibility, and once they become wet it is very difficult to get them dry again which can be dangerous if the conditions are particularly cold and windy. |
Warm top: a fleece is ideal and affordable. We also recommend a spare warm top, in case it gets cold, or you get wet! |
Waterproofs: Even if there is very little chance of rain, these provide great protection against any wind. They are also very handy for frolicking in the snow! |
Small personal first aid kit containing personal mediation, plasters, painkillers etc. |
Food and Water, we recommend a minimum of 1 litre of water, and more for hot energetic summer days. |
A rucksack to store your goodies in. Remember you want enough space to carry food, water and some spare clothes with you. |
Things to take in the Winter:
Warm hat, scarf or buff, gloves, and sunglasses on those bright, snowy days. |
Things to take in the Summer:
Sun hat, Sun glasses and suntan lotion |
Want to be a Leader:
Whilst Leaders carry map and compass, all members are encouraged to learn how to use these tools. Ask any leader for advice. |
Another Suggestion:
Leggings are very useful, as are gaiters. |
