Hello!
Welcome to the University Mountain Walking Club. Students at Bangor are lucky enough to be situated within a short drive of beautiful Snowdonia, and here at the club we aim to offer all students a chance to make the most of that opportunity to explore.
For a small bus fee of £5 (£4 if you are a member) you can enjoy day in the mountains with student leaders. Every week we go to a different mountains and offer walks for all fitness levels.
Our members span all ages, departments and activity levels. There are all sorts of reasons to join: to enjoy the scenery; improve your fitness; for photography opportunities or just to make lots of new friends.
Last year, in addition to walks every week, we also had two trips to a local fun centre, a beach party, a Snowdon fancy dress walk, and many socials. (Did I mention we get free sandwiches at the socials on Tuesday… so you should definitely come. And if your team wins the pub quiz you get free drinks!) We also offered leader navigation training and first aid courses to our members (and had a couple of snowball fights…) This year we’ll also be running a couple of away trips to The Lakes and Scotland.
So… want to join?
Brilliant!
It only costs £10 to join the club for a year. When you join you get a club key-ring which means you only have to pay £4 for the bus. You also get a discount at some outdoor shops (namely Trespass) if you show them your key-ring.
Our walks are usually on Saturdays (except the first walk of each month, which is on a Sunday). We meet at 9:00AM at the Students Union and everybody signs up for the walk (however it’s easier if you sign up online beforehand, then you only have to tick your name instead of writing out all your details!) We usually split up into small groups of 5-15 people, you can choose your group based on how fast and far you want to walk.
You don't need to be a member to come on a walk (though the bus will cost £5 if you're not) Just make sure you are suitably prepared for the walk!
The bus usually picks us up at about 5, so we're back by 6, plenty of time to get down to the social. Good times! If you have any questions feel free to email us, comment on our facebook page or check out our FAQ section. Hope to see you out on the mountains soon :)
